Sonos Move vs Move 2: Is the upgrade worth it?

Sonos presented the successor to the Move portable speaker in the fall – the Sonos Move 2.

Even though hardly anything has changed on the outside, many details have been improved on the inside.

The battery life in particular has been drastically increased: While the first Move only lasted eleven hours, the new speaker now plays non-stop for up to 24 hours.

You can find out what other differences there are in this article.

Stereo sound with the new Move 2

When buying a speaker, the most important feature should of course be the sound. Sonos has actually made a big change under the hood here.

The old Sonos Move had a tweeter and a mid-woofer. As you would expect from Sonos, this sounded pretty decent.

However, the Move 2 now has two tweeters and the familiar mid-woofer.

This ensures that it can also play stereo – i.e. different sounds from the right and left. This can provide a wider sound stage and ultimately a better sound for appropriate songs.

The second tweeter could make music, podcasts, audio books and radio stations sound even clearer.

It only works even better if you bundle two Sonos Move into a stereo pair and place the individual speakers further apart.

Move 2: TruePlay & microphones

Like its predecessor, the Move 2 also has so-called Trueplay: the sound is automatically tuned via integrated microphones and adapts to the respective environment. This actually worked surprisingly well on the first model.

The microphones, which are also responsible for voice control in addition to Trueplay, can be completely deactivated on the new Move 2 not only in the app – but also via a button on the back.

Move 2 now also in green

Sonos has never been particularly experimental when it comes to colors, but now the Move 2 is also available in green, as well as the familiar white and black.

Only the small, portable Sonos Roam offers a little more choice in terms of colors.

Doubled battery power

In addition to the improved sound, the biggest change is the improved battery performance: while the first model only played for a maximum of eleven hours, the successor should last more than twice as long.

Sonos specifies a value of up to 24 hours, although this always depends heavily on the volume and selected additional functions such as voice control & Co.

Move 2 with power bank

Both models can be charged either via the USB-C port on the back or with the supplied charging cradle.

A new feature of the Move 2 is the power bank function: the speaker can not only be charged via USB-C – it can also charge other devices such as smartphones.

New touch slider

With the launch of the new Sonos Era 100 and Era 300 living room speakers, the manufacturer has introduced a new control element on the top: A so-called touch slider, which is controlled with a swipe of the finger and changes the volume.

This was also possible before – but not as quickly and easily.

The Sonos Move 2 is now available for pre-order and is expected to be delivered from September 20.
